Sigma Pi, Alpha Sigma Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon were the big winners in Tugs on Saturday for the conclusion of Greek Week at a brisk and rainy Campus Pond.
Tuggers battled cold, mud and the occasional shower aside from their opponents on the other side of the pond.
Sigma Phi Epsilon defeated Sigma Pi for the championship in the Big Man division in one minute and two seconds. The Sig Eps used a good initial surge off the starting gun to work their way to victory.
Graduate student and Sig Ep team member Paul Laubersheimer said he has participated in Tugs for four years and this was the first time he won the championship.
"It feels unbelievable to win," Laubersheimer said. "A lot of people hate on Tugs, but this out of any college experience is the best thing you can ever do. You're not getting hammered every night. You're doing this together. It's all brotherhood, it's all relationships, it's all bonding. People hate on it, but it's the coolest thing in the world."
Sigma Pi was victorious in the Small Man division.
Sigma Pi defeated Lambda Chi Alpha in 49 seconds to secure the victory. They were able to win even though they had eight new members on their team this season.
Sophomore Jason Abbate said Sigma Pi was coming off a bad loss last year.
"Not one minute went by when I didn't think about that tug," Abbate said. "That's what drove me to do my best. We had eight new guys this year. I didn't want any of those guys to experience what I had to go through for a whole year. It was the worst feeling ever.
I was expecting to tug for five to six minutes like we did last year. I wasn't expecting short tug."
Abbate said he was motivated for victory for Tugs this year.
"We didn't want to think about (anything else)," Abbate said. "We worked so long and so hard. We knew how to do it. It was all second nature. I took myself back to the practice field."
Alpha Sigma Alpha were the winners of the women's division.
ASA defeated Alpha Phi in the day's longest tug, with a time of 2 minutes and 31 seconds. Both teams were deadlocked for much of the tug until ASA was able to pull away.
ASA team member sophomore Megan Dineen said this was her first year on the rope.
"It feels amazing," Dineen said. "It's always a fight until the ending shotgun; we don't say we have it until the ending shotgun."
In the third-place contests, Sig Eps defeated Pi Kappa Alpha in the Small Man division in 32 seconds.
Sigma Sigma Sigma defeated Delta Delta Delta in 55 seconds to take home third place in the women's division.
Delta Tau Delta defeated Sigma Chi in the Big Man consolation to take third place in 2 minutes and 27 seconds.

I think it is very ignorant and lazy that the DEN has once again messed up the name of a Fraternal organization. It is not Phi Kappa Alpha it is Pi Kappa Alpha. (Continued…)
lets make a change

I don't mean to take away from any of this years champions. To this year's winners, Sigma Pi, Sig Ep, and ASA, congrats on a job well done. However, after seeing the results and the way in which they were decided, I think the Greek Week Steering Committee should consider changing the way Tugs happens with respect to the mud. (Continued…)

As a member of the greek community I am so proud to see ASA take the title this year. Although I am not a part of their house I was just as happy as they were to see them finally win instead of A-Phi. (Continued…)
unfair

I think that is is really unfair to say that the reason that Sig Pi and Lambda Chi lost is because of the side that they were on. I dont know if you noticed but ASA won on the side that you say no one had a chance on because of conditions. (Continued…)

Well if you noticed, I was trying adamantly not to take away from the accomplishments of the winners. And yes, you definately pointed out the exception to my arguement. (Continued…)
lets make a change?

I would have the say in response to "lets make a change" that there doesn't need to be any changes. I think that the Greek Week Steering Commitee did an awsome job planning everything this year and put a lot of hard work to make Greek Week fun for everyone greek! Great Job guys!
Mud is a part of tugs, it is always in the lanes during tugs and will always be in the lanes. (Continued…)

I understand that no one is trying to take away from the winning teams, yet saying that Lambda Chi and Sigma Pi's losses did not showcase their abilities is completely false. (Continued…)
