An Eastern male student died Friday at 1701 Ninth St.
The student was identified as Jesse A. Mounce, by Charleston police officer John Blevins.
Blevins said the family had been notified.
Mounce was found in his own apartment.
The death was "apparently self-inflicted," Coles County Coroner Michael Nichols said.
Blevins said Charleston police were dispatched to the residence at 11:10 a.m.
Nichols said Mounce was pronounced dead at 11:38 a.m.
Dan Nadler, Eastern's vice president for student affairs, was on the scene Friday.
"Lots of people are grieving," he said. "Anytime anything like this happens it's a tragic loss."
Also on the scene were Bob Dudolski, director of Greek Life at Eastern, and Charleston interim police chief Mark Jenkins.
Sandy Cox, director of the counseling center, was also on the scene.
Cox and two of her staff members were on site within 15 minutes of being called, Nadler said.
Counseling is being made available for students at the counseling center. The counseling center can be reached at 581-3413.
A memorial service for Mounce is being held at Wesley United Methodist Church tonight at 9 p.m.

Out of respect to Jesse and his family there is no need to start rumors. Jesse was a great person, honorable man, better friend and the best brother I have ever met. (Continued…)

That picture is dumb. You shouldn't have even used a picture.

This is a sad situation to see on campus. The students, his family, friends and everyone who knew him should be prayed for.
But let's also remember it is the duty of the DEN to cover such an event. (Continued…)

Jesse was a good man out of respect for his family and as a friend I felt this picture unessisary and distasteful by the DEN. I think covering the story and being tasteful is something that should have been thought about while covering such a sad story. (Continued…)

Jesse was an amazing guy. I have never experienced a bad side of him and it's too bad we had to lose someone like him. Luckily he is in a better place and that's all we can ask for. (Continued…)

I agree that the photo was inappropriate. The DEN coverage of this story reminds me of tabloid trash...but then again, I have come to expect this from the DEN. (Continued…)

AT,
You can say all you want that this was the most appropriate picture to use so you guys could illustrate YOUR story, but I think maybe a picture of him would have been a wiser choice. (Continued…)

I did not know Jesse personally, but my thoughts and prayers go out to all those who were close to him and are enduring the grieving process.
To the DEN: Have any of you actually opened up a REAL newspaper? In the obituaries do they have the picture from the scene of the death? No, they have an appropriate photo of the victim's bust that portrays the deceased in a positive light. (Continued…)

This is not a photo of the "scene of the death"...it does not in ANY way show the deceased nor the scene. If the caption under the picture hadn't told you what these men were doing, you would have had no idea. (Continued…)
