A water main snapped on Grant Avenue in front of Marty's Sunday afternoon. William Turner, who works with Charleston's utilities department, said the crack was caused by a shift in the ground.

Turner said such shifts are common during changes in the weather, whether its hot or cold.

No residents lost their water because of the incident.

The city received a call about water boiling up from the ground at about 2 p.m. Turner estimated the main broke between noon and 1 p.m.

This is not the first water main snap the city has had to deal with this year. Turner said two similar incidents have occurred on Nursery Road.

The main was fixed by Turner and Carl Ball, who also works with the utilities department.
