RHA brings home four awards at state conference

Eastern's Residence Hall Association won four awards, including Program of the Year, during the annual Illinois RHA conference at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

Eastern had the biggest delegation at the conference with 25 people, said Becky Wilson, national conference coordinator and Eastern's Illinois conference coordinator for RHA.

Temetria Haggert won adviser of the year and Erin Keefe won the award for outstanding service.

Also, Eastern won the award for Program of the Year for ROCFest, an event that is put on in the fall for residents on campus.

The last award Eastern won was for most IRHA points.

Also at the conference, Eastern's bid to host the 2008 IRHA conference was rejected. The conference will be hosted by Western Illinois University.

No salmonella

Eastern dining officials have not taken peanut butter out of eating facilities because the brand provided by vendors has no evidence of salmonella contamination.

A recent outbreak of salmonella forced local grocers and food suppliers to clear their shelves of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter last week.

Salmonella, bacteria responsible for most food borne illnesses, usually causes diarrhea, fevers and abdominal pain lasting about 4 to 7 days.

Without treatment, symptoms will subside unless symptoms are so severe hospilization is needed.

The brands to have been contaminated with salmonella are Peter Pan or Great Value with code 2111 and purchased since May 2006.

If Great Value does not have the code 2111 on the label, it was not made in the contaminated facility and it has not been affected.

Since the outbreak, close to 300 hundred people in 41 states have been infected but no deaths have been reported. If peanut butter from contaminated brands has been eaten, a health provider should be contacted.

Otherwise all Peter Pan and Great Value code 2111 peanut butter should be thrown away.
