Eastern was shut out for the first time this season as the men's soccer team failed to take advantage of key opportunities against the University of Illinois-Chicago.
The Panthers (2-4-1) lost this defensive struggle to the Flames (3-0-1) by a score of 1-0 with the only goal coming five minutes into the game off of the leg of junior midfielder Eric Cervantes. The Panthers attempted three shots on goal however, none of them found the net. On the contrary, UIC was able to net their lone goal on just two shots on goal.
Eastern freshman goalkeeper Nick Alexander, despite giving up the losing goal on Sunday, has played well in his first collegiate starts. Alexander posted his first career shutout Friday in the Panther's win against Valparaiso and with consistent scoring should keep Eastern in every game.
Eastern head coach Adam Howarth knows that Sunday's loss was against the talented Flames team and with a little luck the outcome could have been entirely different.
"It was a story of two halves, the first half we played was ok but we had some mental lapses or brain farts, that is how we conceded that goal by just not picking up that corner kick, stuff we need to do," Howarth said. "We played well. However, it looked liked we may have been a little fatigued, we did play three games in five days and that would be tough on any team."
Eastern began the weekend with a home win Friday at Lakeside Field against Valparaiso winning the game 2-0. The game's winning goal coming from freshman midfielder Adam Gartner three minutes into regulation, his second of the season. Junior forward Jeff Stewardson added an insurance goal at the 80:50 mark, also his second of the season.
The defense also played well allowing the Crusaders to only one shot on goal while the Panthers ran laps around the opposing defense firing nine shots on goal.
One never knows which Panthers team will show up, the team brimming with potential and talent on display Friday, or the team that struggles to score like on Sunday. Howarth knows that with more practice the desired results will soon follow.
"If you look at the UIC website we pretty much dominated the game. The only difference is we did not get the goal," Howarth said. "This week hopefully we will work on that and with some rest we will be ready for Sunday."
