According to en.wikipedia.org, a metrosexual is defined as an urban male of any sexual orientation who has a strong aesthetic sense and spends a great deal of time and money on his appearance and lifestyle.
According to the Web site, British journalist Mark Simpson coined the word in 1994 and used it to describe the fashion-conscious target audience of men's magazines such as FHM, Esquire and GQ.
Most young males participate in metrosexual-like rituals without admitting it or even knowing so. For example, men who iron their clothes, wear cologne or even use products in their hair would, by definition, be considered metrosexual.
"The biggest misconception about the term is that people confuse it with homosexuality and femininity," said senior marketing major Andy Gahan.
Gahan was shocked and upset when his mother jokingly called him a metrosexual his freshman year.
"I got mad when she said that because I didn't know what [metrosexual] was,"
Gahan said.
He said just because he makes himself look presentable for a job or a party doesn't mean he should be labeled with a trendy term.
Nathan Davenport, a senior Psychology major, said he believes there are different degrees of metrosexuality.
"I don't think there's anything wrong with ironing your clothes or putting a product in your hair, but I think that plucking your eye brows and wearing makeup is just taking it too far," Davenport said.
While Davenport doesn't consider himself to be a metrosexual, his friends have a different opinion.
"My friends joke with me by calling me a metrosexual, but it doesn't offend me," Davenport said. "Women like a man who dresses and smells nice."
