Students no longer have to look at chipped paint or trip over a crack in the sidewalk on campus because of changes being made to improve the campus' appearance, Eastern administrators say.

These changes include replaced sidewalks, repaired parking lots, improved campus signage and enhanced landscaping areas on campus, said Gary Reed, director of Facilities Planning and Management.

"The campus' appearance is essential to a high-quality campus experience," Reed said. "So we are committed to supporting that aspect.

"(Eastern's administration) is very supportive of efforts to improve campus appearance," Reed said.

These changes on campus are not going unnoticed.

Jamie Hahn, a senior family and consumer sciences major, said he has seen the changes in Eastern's appearance throughout the past four years.

"When I was a freshman, everything was under construction or being redone," Hahn said.

She now noticed the new sidewalks and new trees planted outside of Thomas Hall.

"We continue to receive positive comments about the physical aspects of the campus," Reed said, adding that he believes the campus' appearance is important to Eastern's heritage.

Funding for these projects has not yet been determined, but more improvements will be made as money becomes available, starting with the higher priority ones, Reed said. These projects will require effort and investment on a continuing basis.

It is important to keep the campus maintained, not only for everyday students and teachers, but for visitors and prospective students as well, he said.
