Column: My prince has arrived

It could be a silly crush, but for the first time in 22 years, I has finally fallen head-over-heels in love.
I knew it was fate two weeks ago today when I first saw him. He ignored me at first, but I am pretty sure it was simply because he is a bit on the shy side.
But, the moment our eyes met, I knew we were meant to be together.
Since that night, just 14 days ago, we have spent as much time together as possible. I don't think I have devoted myself before as I have these past couple of weeks.
When I am at class I think about him. At work, still thinking about him. Then when I'm in the newsroom until the sun goes down, I am thinking about him even more.
As most of my friends can vouch for, I am a pretty independent woman, which is why I can only claim one real relationship in my entire life. So this newfound devotion and love that I have been overwhelmed with is a bit unusual.
I suppose it is safe enough to tell you my love's name is Leroy. You know, like Leroy Brown? The baddest man in the whole damn town? Yeah, that's him.
When my friends ask "Hey, April, how is Leroy today?" I immediately feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and I can't help but smile.
People know it has been a good day because of the twinkle in my eyes after Leroy is mentioned.
And now I suppose it is safe enough to say my love, Leroy, has four legs and is a bit slimy. That's right folks, my love and devotion belongs to none other than a frog.
Ok, roll your eyes or sigh in disappointment, but I am for real on this one. I don't think any man has ever made me as giddy as Leroy has.
Now, Leroy is not the warty kind of frog you may be thinking of. He is currently the size of a 50-cent piece and a bundle of joy at that.
While Leroy can be the typical bright green color like most frogs, he changes from brown to green depending on his surroundings- a chameleon frog if you wish.
I decided to get Leroy on a whim. I like to tell myself it was boredom. In actuality, it was a way to avoid the dreaded "G" word I shudder at every time I have heard lately. (hint: it starts with grad and ends with uation...shush!)
Maybe I got him because I like to feel needed. I like to come home everyday and check on him as soon as I walk in the door. I like the fact he needs me to clean his home, feed him and make sure his home is just the right temperature.
And as silly as it may sound, he keeps me company. Sometimes my days are nearly 12 hours long. Usually the last thing I want to do is have a conversation with anyone when I first walk in the door, so I chill with Leroy and then enjoy the rest of my night.
Maybe I subconsciously got a frog just hoping one day he turns into my prince charming.
Regardless, I'm going to be just as pathetic as I have sounded these past 600 words and love Leroy like I have never loved before.
