Some sorority members on Eastern's campus have a mom away from home.

Sigma Sigma Sigma and Alpha Gamma Delta sororities have caring women known as house moms who live in their houses and watch out for the girls. Wanda Bence takes care of the members of Alpha Gam while Wanda Reid watches over the Tri Sigma members.

House moms have many duties, ranging from being a good listener to making sure rules are enforced by all members of the sorority.

"(Bence) enforces the rules," said Shelby Blomberg, a sophomore fashion merchandising major and member of Alpha Gam. "We're not supposed to have boys in our house, so she makes sure that we follow that rule and all of the other rules set out by nationals."

Another job of a houseman is to take care of the members and help them with their problems. The members of both Tri Sigma and Alpha Gam agree their house moms are special because they are great listeners.

"(Reid) is our peer adviser," said Amie Adams, a sophomore elementary education major and member of Tri Sigma. "Her door is always open, and you can talk to her about anything."

Bence also helps the members of Alpha Gam with any problems they may have.

"She is like a mom to us," said Kristen Wilson, a member of Alpha Gam and sophomore elementary education major. "Whenever someone is homesick she talks to them and lets them know that she is there for them."

Reid said it is her goal to do what is best for the Tri Sigmas. Doing what's best can range from tiptoeing around the house in the early morning hours so she does not wake any of the girls to driving girls to 8 a.m. classes on her way to work at the cashier's office on campus.

"I think it helps that I am a natural mother," Reid said. "I know how to take care of the girls, and it helps that these girls are just so smart, funny and delightful."

The members of these sororities feel they have a great relationship with their house moms because of how nice the women are.

"(Reid is) the sweetest lady," Adams said. "She knows everyone by name and is friends with everyone."

The members of Alpha Gam feel having a houseman benefits everyone involved in their sorority.

"(Bence) is always there for us when we need her," Blomberg said. "Besides, it is really comforting to our parents to know we are being taken care of."
