Daily Eastern News earns many awards at ICPA competition

The Daily Eastern News and Diverse publications brought home several awards at this weekend's Illinois College Press Association awards banquet in Chicago.
The DEN claimed 21 awards, including four first place accolades, while Diverse received four awards in the non-dailies above 4,000 circulation category.
Stephen Haas, a sophomore journalism major, was recognized 12 times - 11 for photography and one for thedailyeasternnews.com Web site. Haas received first place honors for feature photography.
Other first place winners include The DEN staff for the eight-page Blair Hall fire special edition; Matt Williams, a senior journalism major, and Michael Schroeder, a senior history education major, won the news story category for the Blair fire; and David Thill, a sophomore journalism major, placed first in the editorial cartoon category.
The ICPA competition featured 37 different student publications in the state with separate awards for dailies and two for non-dailies.
Also, former professor and DEN adviser John David Reed, who helped establish the ICPA in 1982, had the general excellence award named in his honor.
The most coveted award at the banquet was named after Reed who is retiring from the organization after 22 years of service.
