The Student Senate will hold elections today to decide who will act as Student Senate speaker next semester.

The Student Senate speaker runs all senate meetings, oversees all of the senate committees and acts as a voting member of the senate.

The speaker is one of the few positions in the senate not elected by the students. It is also the only position that has one-semester terms.

Ryan Berger, current speaker, said he will run for the position again and is unaware of any other students interested in being speaker.

"One thing I have tried to do is maintain the motivation and the drive we've had this semester," Berger said. "I would like to continue to do that in the future."

Each candidate for speaker speaks to the senate explaining why he or she should be elected. Then two people chosen by each candidate speak on their behalf before the senate moves into discussion.

"Senators will ask questions then will be free to discuss the candidates before going to a vote," Berger said.

Berger will also give his State of the Senate address, which is required every semester.

Berger said one of the topics of his speech is that several students have resigned throughout the course of the semester, making it more difficult for the remaining senate members.

"This has been a difficult semester to be involved with senate because of all of the senators we've lost," he said. "The people who stayed involved all semester have really worked hard on meeting their goals, despite the lack of senators."

Student Body President Chris Getty will also give his State of the University address, which is also required once a semester.

The Student Senate will also discuss a resolution allocating more than $100 to pay for the Student Grievance Program.

The program was started by the Student Relations Committee to give students a chance to contact the senate with problems they have.

The committee will use the money to mail out information to every on-campus student.

"It's a way for us to understand what students are going through," Berger said.

The Student Senate will meet 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Arcola/Tuscola Room of the Martin Luther King Jr University Union.
