Students look forward to Thanksgiving

It's that time of the year again where the leaves fall and families get together for the big day. Thanksgiving concerns mostly families and students returning home for the weeklong break. As Dayna DiVenere, a sophomore elementary education major, knows, Thanksgiving is commonly known as one of the best meals of the year. (1) comment

Golden Era of Geography, is it or is it not? That was the question addressed by Eastern alum Andrew Baker during his lecture for Geography Awareness Week on Thursday in the Physical Science Building. Baker believes we are living in the golden era of geography because of all of our technological advances that allow us to graph better maps and ultimately learn more about people. (1) comment

University ready for groundbreaking

Golden shovels have been waiting to get in on the construction of the Renewable Energy Center since it began. A groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 3:30 p.m. today, two weeks after actual construction work began. BREAKING: Eastern football assistant coach Jeff Hoover dies in car accident

Updated 1:50 a.m.: Eastern football offensive line coach Jeff Hoover died late Saturday night in a single-car accident. He was 41-years old. Effingham County coroner Leigh Hammer confirmed to The Daily Eastern News that Hoover was a passenger in a car traveling northbound on Interstate 57 when it swerved to avoid a deer and rolled over. Martin  plans for fundraising

Vice President for University Advancement candidate Bob Martin said he has big plans for Eastern if he is chosen to replace Jill Nilsen. Martin wants to implement an inclusive fundraising campaign with adding to academic scholarships to improve Eastern's efficiency. (0) comments

Six finalists have been named for the dean of the College of Arts and Humanities position. Among them is Bonnie Irwin, dean of the Honors College at Eastern. On-campus interviews for the finalists begin Nov. 30. Up first is Marilyn Levine, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Eastern Oregon University in LaGrange, Ore. (2) comments

Another person has joined the list of lawsuits related to a May 30 double-decker bus accident that resulted in two deaths. Eastern student Michael McKenna filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Lincoln Springs Resort, the Graywood Foundation and others, seeking damages for the accident. (8) comments

Eleven of Charleston's 19 tobacco retailers were issued citations following a state grant funded tobacco compliance detail conducted by the Charleston Police Department Monday. A minor was sent into all local retailers to purchase a tobacco product under police supervision. (3) comments

Great American Smokeout inspires students on campus to kick butts

The Health Education Resource Center provided students the opportunity to give their lungs a rest at its Great American Smokeout. Students, faculty and staff received information on being tobacco free and were given free quit kits and hot chocolate. Brad Tribble, alcohol and tobacco education coordinator, was on the South Quad to help encourage those around to take part. (0) comments

Delta Sigma Pi will have a bake sale fundraiser in Coleman Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 30 through Dec. 2. All baked goods will cost $1. Delta Sigma Pi will be in the northeast and southeast hallways. There will be puppy chow, muffins, cookies of all sorts, brownies and more. (0) comments

Musical revue aims to help those in need

The musical revue "G.I. Jukebox" will bring audience members back to a 1940s feel in more ways than one this weekend. The Central Illinois Stage Company and Eastern's Student Community Service department are encouraging audience members to bring any non-perishable food to the revue as part of Eastern's "30 Days of Change: EIU Fights Hunger" food drive.
