Does increased black student enrollment equal higher graduation rates?

To anyone who has spent a week or even a day at Eastern, there is no secret that Eastern is a predominantly white institution. However, this is not to infer that no black students or any other non-white students are enrolled here. In fact, it is quite the contrary. (0) comments

The term "good hair" has become the topic of discussion among women for years. "Good" hair has been defined in different ways in the past, present and also the upcoming future. Some believe that good hair is thick and curly, or even thin and straight, what happened to braids and locks, or natural and kinky. (1) comment

Column: Gaining different perspective on diversity

Growing up in the suburbs can extremely narrow a person's worldview. I grew up in Naperville, a ritzy, predominantly white town. Most of my classmates were white throughout grade and high school, and they did not have much interaction with diverse groups. These same classmates would repeatedly spout racist jokes concerning crime and intelligence and laugh uncontrollably. (15) comments

Essence of Winston

Dressed in a gray fleece sweater, dark jeans and white Air Force Ones, Ian Winston's clothes embodied his personality. During an interview, he exuded confidence and was still radiant from his win at the Nov. 5 Essence of a Man pageant. Winston, a 23-year-old senior, was born and raised in Champaign. (0) comments

N-word, b-word controversy

Discussions over the n-word and the b-word caused mixed opinions and future questions among students. Robert Jones, a senior biological science major, hosted the lecture titled "The Development of the N-Word and the B-Word." Jones said the two carry an abundance of weight and baggage in the history and meaning. (0) comments

MINORITY misrepresentation out of proportion within crime statistics

Media portrayal is key to developing social attitudes in the national consciousness, and this is no different for minorities. According to Broadcast News Portrayal of Minorities: Accuracy in Reporting in the American Behavioral Scientist by Roger D. Klein and Stacey Naccarato of the University of Pittsburg, broadcast news portrays minorities more frequently as criminals than are whites, and minority misrepresentation has been shown to be out of proportion within crime statistics. The National Alliance- a neo-Nazi political group that promotes racism, segregation and natural eugenics under the guise of white pride- is attempting to push the goal of segregation into society.
