While there has been much oppression in the past and even in the present, a lot of barriers have been crossed amongst individuals and groups alike. While a large-scale shift toward racial equality has slowly progressed from the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865 to the Civil Rights movement 100 years later, smaller-scale means to achieve equality have not been as widely exposed. "Max Payne" is based on the video game designed for PC, Playstation 2, Xbox and Game Boy. Mark Wahlberg stars as Max Payne, the DEA agent who gets revenge by going after the fiends who murdered his wife and infant child. New ticket costs haven't hurt sales

The prices at the Will Rogers Theater, 705 Monroe Ave., have gone up but that hasn't stopped residents and students from going to catch a flick. The movie theater on the square made some changes in May, switching from showing older movies to showing newer releases, but at the expense of having to push up the price of tickets a bit. Richard Russo's latest novel, "Bridge of Sighs," is a departure from his familiar form but not a change of sensibilities. The tale is set in a fictional upstate New York town called Thomaston. The town has the seedy bars, a greasy diner and closed tanneries found in Mohawk, another fictional New York town familiar to fans of the writer. (0) comments

'Daughter of the Blues' Shirley King to play in Mattoon

Shirley King, daughter of legendary blues guitarist B.B. King, is in the market for a new sound. King is attempting to fuse R&B and blues music. With the release of her new album, King is attempting to move blues to a new direction. King uses a rotation of musicians to perform her songs and has found that people are surprised when they come up to meet her. (0) comments
