Well-traveled scholar drawn toward smaller communities

James Ochwa-Echel isn't drawn to city life. Growing up in Uganda's rural north, Ochwa-Echel walked five miles to school each day on "marrum," or unpaved roads. In 2006, as a well-traveled scholar, he eagerly accepted a short-term position at Eastern Washington University because of that school's rural location. (0) comments

In Ochwa-Echel's sparsely decorated Blair Hall office, tucked away in a cabinet behind his desk is the proof of that passion: a folded and worn white envelope. While researching his doctoral dissertation on Uganda's educational gender gap, Ochwa-Echel, coordinator of Eastern's African American Studies program, developed a passion for women's education. Bill looks to increase study abroad options

More than 300 students Rock the Vote

Rock the Vote got 305 people registered to vote Wednesday. The booth in the Martin Luther King, Jr. University Union near the Food Court got 85 students registered and booth in the Library Quad got 220 students registered. Joseph Cromwell, a sophomore political science major, said he was already registered at home, but thought it would be a good idea to register a change of address here so he would not have to go all the way back home to vote. Student Senate discusses shuttle bus service, Major Fair

Dan Nadler, vice president for student affairs, addressed Student Senate last night on the issue of the shuttle buses. Last week, it was brought to Nadler's attention that the H&H shuttle service might have been charging students for rides. "We don't know if this bus was charging students for sure, but a few 'mystery riders' from Student Senate got on the bus and reported that they did not get charged," Nadler said. (0) comments
