UPDATED at 9:30 a.m.- A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck the area at 4:36 a.m. Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey Web site. Originally the USGS reported the quake to be a 5.4 magnitude on the Richter Scale. As of 9 a.m., the epicenter of the quake was listed as seven miles north, northeast of Bellmont. (4) comments

Eastern student Mark Schwartz's death was caused by natural causes, said Coles County Coroner Mike Nichols. Schwartz, 22, was pronounced dead around 7 p.m. on Feb. 29 at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center Emergency Room. Panther Service Day is changing. Rich Higginbotham, student vice president of student affairs and chairman for Panther Service Day, said this year they're taking a different approach to the event. "What we're doing different this year from last year is that in the past we just painted houses, but what we're doing this year is going around the community cleaning streets, going around raking leaves behind people's yards and just cleaning around the fences," he said. President Bill Perry wants people to have ample room for parking. And with the Doudna Fine Arts Center scheduled to open in the fall, the availability of parking could become an issue.
