Earl's kick sends game to overtime

The Panthers played in their third Missouri Valley Conference game Sunday ending regulation with a tie and playing two-overtime periods before finishing tied 1-1. Eastern (4-6-2, 1-1-1) was seconds from a two-loss conference record when sophomore midfielder Brad Earl scored on a Mick Galeski set up with 57 seconds remaining in regulation.

La forza del destino. Translated from Spanish, it means "the power of fate." In the postseason, it explains everything. It defines why Reggie Jackson is a Hall of Famer, how we remember an old first base umpire (Don Denkinger) and the reason Dent really is a four-letter word for Red Sox fans.

Before Sunday's women's rugby game at Ohio State, Eastern coach Frank Graziano looked into the eyes of his players and knew something about this game was unlike the first six. Graziano noticed a certain intensity in his player's faces - especially the seniors - as Eastern (6-1) got redemption in knocking off the Buckeyes 12-0.

Although this past weekend did not seem to favor the Panthers, they returned from Terre Haute with their heads held high. The Panthers competed at the NCAA Pre-National Cross Country meet on Saturday at Indiana State University's LaVern Gibson Championship course.

Going into the fall practices, Eastern head baseball coach Jim Schmitz had a lot of questions about his team that ended the 2005 season 17-39 and 14-13 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Fortunately for Schmitz, many of those questions were answered as the Panthers wrapped up fall ball with the Fall World Series, Eastern's annual inter-squad scrimmage.
